Panama City

It has been suggested that the "Lost Convention" post on my main blog might be buried too far down the page. This solves that.
Post your convention related stuff here. I hope there's still interest....

If I play "I never", I need to have paramedics with a spare liver on standby.

I hope I don't regret saying this, but what is "I Never"?

"I Never" is the game that Sawyer and Kate played the night he went looking to kill his Great Boar of Guilt.
You make a statement, eg. "I never slept with a circus freak" and if you did, you drink. If you didn't, you don't.
Let's just say that in a room full of musicians, you'd run out of booze in a hurry...

Ok, I'm impressed. You found one I haven't done. *glug*
That said, I positively refuse to give an "I never". I'll play along, but somehow, I have the sense that you people already know more about me than you should...
If I start throwing out "I nevers" and everyone but me is drinking, I'm gonna get downright uncomfortable...

I told my husband last night that I want to go to PC with you all. He looked at me like I had lost my mind. Then he must have decided that I wasn't serious because he just changed the subject. That poor man, he just never knows what is going to come out of my mouth!

Someone mentioned flying out of Baltimore on Southwest. That was my plan, too, but I couldn't find any flights to PC or anywhere I thought was close enough. Of course, geography isn't exactly my strong suit, so there may be something I didn't look at.

C4L--As I recall, it isn't exactly *balmy* in PC in the middle of winter. Suggestions on a good time of the year???

Beaner, I don't think I would subject you to the monsters the first time we meet in person. They are just overwhelming, and you may choose to forget that you ever knew me! There are times, of course, when my boys can be very charming. We had a dinner party last night, and one of our neighbors was here, but her husband is out of town. My 4-yr-old WALKED HER HOME and held her hand "to protect her in case there were any bad guys." He is too sweet. Sometimes. He's eager to play flag football this year "so I can push them down and make a touchdown." Obviously, he doesn't grasp the concept of FLAG football!

Beaner, I've got it! I don't even have to include my husband on this initial meeting, and it can all be like a LOST coincidence! On July 29, I'm going to Let's Eat in Ellicott City. Have you heard of it? It's an industrial kitchen where you go to assemble a number of meals that you then take home and freeze. If you live alone, it might not be that great. But if you have friends over once in a while, it would be good because you'd already have the food prepared, and just have to heat it. You have to make a minimum of 8 meals, but I think 2 people can split a session. This would be such a great place to meet!!!! Let me know if you want to do it, and I'll give you the contact info. You can look at their website at LetsEatDinner.com, and then decide if there is something there that appeals to you. Oh, I understand that they ply you with wine as you are assembling, so it's right up your alley! :) I checked to make sure that there were spots still available, and "Carly" told me that if you call in the next few days, she'll be able to get you in and make sure we're close together in the prep stations. I scheduled for 1:00 in the afternoon. I THINK you are supposed to allot 2 hours.

As far as rent-a-kids, you sound JUST LIKE MY SISTER. Every time she's here, she brings TONS of junk food, squirt guns, etc., and gets the kids ALL WOUND UP. Then when she decides she's done playing, they're my problem. I can totally understand why Auntie Beaner doesn't get much time with her own sister's kids!!!! Of course, my kids absolutely ADORE my sister. (What's not to love?!)

Oh, I saw that someone suggested San Antonio and DS's hotel for the convention. That sounds like a good idea to me. It's warm there, right?

As far as P.C. as destination, it just sort of seemed good. In terms of warm, it's warm enough there in Jan. that I'll be in shorts all weekend, and it's relatively central (in terms of warm spots) for everyone. San An. is a bit too far to drive but flying isn't right out. I just prefer to drive 'cuz then I have a car. If I fly, I have to rent one and when you add that cost to airfare, it's usually enough dough to make the drive worth it.
Personally, I'm not that picky. Whenever, wherever. I can get time off anytime with a week or two notice.

San Antonio in January would be low to mid 60's, but occasional cold snaps do occur. The problem with January is rain. Mid February to mid March would probably be better and about 5 to 10 degrees warmer.

My guess is that anything along the Gulf Coast is going to be rainy in January and in the 50's or 60's.

50's and 60's in January? That's shorts weather for sure!
It may not sound warm, but it's literally 80 to 100 degrees warmer than Ottawa at the same time.
Bring on the golfing!
I'm still hoping to have the First Annual Island Open Golf Tourney. We could have a sea urchin themed trophy...

For warmth AND sun in January, we are pretty much limited to South Florida or Southern California. Unfortunately, Winter is "high season" in both of those places.

A friend of mine was in Miami last month and was shocked that her hotel charged $30/day just to park her vehicle! Paying to park is also a problem in San Antonio near downtown and the Riverwalk. It depends on what you want to do, but you don't really need a car to get around in the Riverwalk /Downtown area of S.A.

Beaner, I e-mailed them to see if I can buy 12 meals, and you take 4 and I'll take 8. Or we can do 6 and 6. Whatever is best for you. I'm waiting for them to e-mail me back. One of my neighbors said she would go, so I'm definitely in. I'll let you know when they get back to me.

LB, I haven't heard back from them yet. I'll call them tomorrow. I told my husband I asked you to go. He rolled his eyes and told me I was taking this "lost thing" a little too far. I told him he doesn't have to worry about you turning out to be a 6'4", 250 lb. man, but he worries....I reassured him that my neighbor, Lisa, is also going, but that didn't really put his mind at ease. But I'm going, and hopefully you're going, and he'll just have to deal with it. If he gives me this much of a hard time about this, just wait till I tell him I'm going to FL with you all!

Jess -
As per LB's C.V., I too have no criminal record, have NO idea what my credit score is but it must be good because all these pre-approved credit apps keep getting mailed to me, a very pleasant group of people at my bank own my house and car and let me use them in exchange for my paycheck every two weeks, I have dated women with Bachelor and Masters Degrees, drive by at least 7 or 8 churches daily and both my late parents only made fun of me on weekends.

You guys all crack me up! I will submit your CVs for review.

I told him that I invited you to Let's Eat because I've never lied to him yet, and I don't intend to start now. I figure we can get together at Macaroni Grill or Melting Pot with husband and possibly children once you see that I am also not a 6'2", 200 lb. man.

By the way, I heard back from Let's Eat. They said there is NO PROBLEM with us splitting the meals any way we want. You can buy either 8 or 12 meals. Maybe we should buy 8, just to see how we like it. You can decide how many you want, and I'll take the rest. Then we'll split the cost accordingly. I do have to tell them ahead of time what meals we'll be preparing, so go to the website and see what you want. If you only want 2 or 3, that's fine. Or you can take 4 and I'll take 4. I e-mailed to ask them if you have to register or if you just show up and tell them that you're splitting with me. I haven't heard back yet. I tried to call just now, but got the answering machine. I'll let you know when I get an answer.

Honesty is the best policy. With these exceptions.
Do I look fat in this?
Is she prettier than me?
Do you ever think about other women?
If you die, do you want me to remarry?
The correct and ONLY answer (Speaking as a man) to the above questions is: LEAVE THE ROOM.

GB, that is so funny! My 6-yr-old son put on a new pair of swim goggles the other day, turned to his teenaged sister and said, "Do these make me look fat?" Without skipping a beat, she said, "yes."

LB, I still haven't heard back from them about you registering separately. I tried to call them twice, but got the machine. Maybe they are not open today. I'm going to make 2 of the pesto and shrimp pasta myself. That looks delicious. I ran into another girlfriend today, and she would like to come, too. Hope you don't feel overwhelmed with my friends! Before I had the brilliant idea to invite you, I had sent out an e-mail to about 6 or 8 friends and neighbors to see if anyone was interested in going.

Beaner, I just talked to the people at Let's Eat. You don't have to do anything at all except show up! I can list your meals under my name, and we'll just square up afterwards. I'm going to order you the pesto shrimp, spinach lasagna, and meatballs, right? I'll wait till tomorrow to order so that you can post here if that's not what you want. If I don't hear from you otherwise, those are the meals I'll order for you. Don't forget, you can split those in half. Or bring your own containers and make them even smaller.

Holy smokes!!! I leave town and this topic picks up!! Wow!!

Ok, a little background for those who weren't at the EW site when this topic first came up:

We settled on Panama City because we wanted to do this on a beach locale (since the Losties are on a beach), it is sort of warm (for GB) in January/February, and it is cheaper (low cost!) to stay here than most places in the winter. Roseman and Chuts were big on the idea and all involved were driving (and mostly close in range) when we originally discussed putting this together.

I, of course, suggested and fully supported PC because I live here (no travel for me!) and I thought it would be helpful to have someone at the selected location to help facilitate planning. I also suggested the hotel where I work because our rates are pretty low in the winter, it's a decent size, 3 pools and a hot tub, a restaurant across the street AND onsite tiki bar (so I could make Mango-tinis).

I did a quick search on air travel. Flights to Panama City from Baltimore leaving 1/31 & return 2/4 were as LB said, ranging from $345-$350. 2nd option flying into Tallahassee (1 1/2 hour drive to PC) $292-$300.

Hotel costs probably around $50 a night, although our hotel has winter specials where you can get a WHOLE WEEK for less than $300.

Weather: January is usually the coldest month but I believe the average temp is 59, high's mid 60's, low's low 50's.

With all that said, I'm not opposed to changing the location, but if it's too far I won't be able to come. Being a single mother and January/February being school months I have to be a responsible mom!!

As far as background, I don't have a criminal record, never been in handcuffs (darn it!), have no idea what my credit score is (and don't want to know!), I'm 5'2" , 115 lbs (most of the time), own my house, have an A.S., and can make a margarita!!

Whatever is decided, I am extremely happy we are actively talking about this again!! If we do change the location, anywhere that's within a 5 -8 hour drive from here I'm in!!

Beaner, we are scheduled and ready to go for Let's Eat. I ordered 8 meals total, 3 for you. The cost was $150, so your portion is 150/8 then X 3, whatever that is....$50 something I guess. Just pay me when you see me. That sounds weird, doesn't it? Hmm, guess I'll have to tell you what I look like, huh? I'll let you know what I'll be wearing that day. I can't wait to actually meet you. My husband, of course, if freaking out. I tenderly brought up the subject of the 3 of us getting together for dinner. I think he'll need actual proof that you're not the 200# man he is envisioning! I've got to go to WORK tomorrow to start getting my CLASSROOM ready. Wow, that sounds weird. Of course, I'm taking the rest of the week off....And now that I think of it, I'm not actually getting paid for tomorrow.....After that I will be out of town for the week, with very limited access to a computer, so you probably won't hear from me until next weekend or later. I expect to see lots of posts to catch up on then!
